Smelling (olfactory) differences

Information and adjustments

The learner may have a strong aversion to smells or seek smells out. Flexible adjustments to the task or environment could include:

  • Setting up a ‘no scent’ zone, free from air fresheners, flowers, perfumes etc to reduce sensory overload and support regulation.

  • Ensuring staff are aware of the perfume/aftershave and other scented products they wear to prevent unintentional discomfort or distraction for sensitive pupils.

  • Consideration of cleaning materials to minimise sensory triggers that may cause distress or avoidance.

  • Provide scented resources to offer controlled sensory experiences that can be calming or engaging.

  • Provide opportunities to bake and cook to create different smells to encourage positive sensory exploration in a safe, familiar context.

  • Awareness of the impact of smells from the outdoor environment, e.g. rubbish collection, acknowledging this can support emotional regulation.
