Areas of Need

Tailored Approaches and strategies that settings could ordinarily take to meet an individual child or young person’s needs. This section is organised to correspond with the four broad areas of need identified in the 2015 SEND Code of Practice.

Short code Description
Communication and Interaction Children and young people with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) have difficulty in communicating with others.
Cognition & Learning Support for learning differences may be required when learners make less than the expected rate of progress over time despite implementing appropriate adaptation.
Social, emotional and mental health Children and young people may experience a wide range of social and emotional difficulties which manifest themselves in many ways.
Sensory and/or Physical Needs Some children and young people have a disability that prevents or hinders them from making use of the educational facilities generally provided.
