Mobility

Adaptations and guidance.

  • Regularly audit your school layout to ensure learners with mobility needs can move safely and freely.

  • Ensure the setting has a published Accessibility Plan. Include SEND learners in all activities and trips through reasonable adjustments, in line with the Equality Act 2010.

  • Use chairs with backs or other suitable seating at lunchtime to ensure safe eating and promote social inclusion.

  • Adapt PE Lessons

    • Use varied equipment (e.g. bean bags, balloons) to suit different physical abilities.

    • Offer alternative roles (e.g. referee, scorer) to encourage team participation.

    • Plan inclusive games (e.g. Boccia, walking football) to ensure all learners can engage.

  • Adjust storage access e.g. Install pegs and drawers at varied heights to support independence for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility.

  • Facilitate safe movement:

    • Provide lift passes or allow early lesson exits to reduce congestion and injury risk.

    • Ensure accessible toilets and multi-level handrails for safe navigation.

    • Offer supervision on stairs where needed to build independence safely.

  • Support transitions between year groups with physical and emotional preparation to reduce anxiety and disruption.
